Angler handling Cortland Fluorocarbon XTR fly fishing leader material beside the water

Fly Leader Material

Build the right connection for every presentation.

Choose nylon, fluorocarbon, indicator mono, and specialty materials for building, adjusting, and repairing fly fishing leaders.

Application Guide

Choose leader material based on presentation, visibility, sink rate, and the amount of abrasion you expect. Use these common applications as a starting point, then adjust diameter and strength for the water and species in front of you. For more setup help, view the Line & Leader Setup Guide.

When to Replace

Inspect leader material before each outing and throughout the day, especially after wind knots, snags, contact with rock or wood, and repeated fly changes. Replace any section that no longer feels smooth, supple, or secure.

  • Visible nicks or abrasion
  • Wind knots or weakened sections
  • Curling, stiffness, or discoloration
  • Reduced knot strength
