FAQ

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

Perfect Presentation

I have loved this line for years! Lays down softly and beautifully. My go to small stream line for finicky fish. Once anyone tries this product, they will be blown away by it's performance and presentation. Give it a try; a real game changer!

Great dry fly line

This double taper line seems to be really "friendly" to casting small dry flies on small streams, which I fish a lot. I have another weight forward Cortland line on my 5-weight rod and it casts great too. The Cortland lines just seem to be really good casting lines, which is what you need a fly line to do. I also love the fact that they are made here in the US. If you've never tried a double taper fly line, I would high recommend tbe 444 Sylk from Cortland

444 Sylk 4 DT

Purchased this line during the off season and because most of our mountain streams are mostly locked in ice until the end of April ( April and May finds me streamer fishing) only had a few chances to cast it in the yard until recently. Finally I was able to try it with a dry fly on a small creek. I'm not an expert caster but I was immediately impressed with the accuracy and delicate presentation of this line on my lighter weight bamboo rod. The head of the line appears to be more supple than other brands and feels slippery. Previously, I have found that some of my casts with other lines tend not to furl out completely, short of the target. For some reason now everything seemed to click perfectly with my casting style, the line weight, leader and fly. I have used Cortland products in the past 30 years, with good success but when local dealers stopped carrying them I tried other line brands. In recent years I have purchased Cortland lines and products on line and would definitely continue to use and recommend them.

Sulk and Bamboo

Used my new Sylk 5wt. double taper yesterday for the first time paired with my 7’-6” Wes Jordan. Proved to be very smooth and accurate. The color is great. Fished the upper Pecos with much success. Must be the Sylk!

444 Sylk Double Taper Fly Line – Authentic Feel for Precision Fishing

July 15th, 2025

For anglers who favor the refined rhythm of bamboo or fiberglass rods, the Cortland 444 Sylk Double Taper Fly Line is more than just a match—it’s a revelation. Designed to mimic the original feel and finesse of natural silk fly lines, this modern synthetic alternative brings old-school elegance into the present day. Its extra-supple construction, true-to-tradition taper, and ultra-thin diameter offer an unmatched presentation experience, particularly in tight streams, calm waters, and delicate hatch conditions.

Crafted with a braided nylon multifilament core and a smooth, low-friction coating, the Sylk Double Taper is soft in the hand and subtle on the water. It loads progressively on slower-action rods and responds to minor shifts in tempo and motion. The long front and rear tapers create excellent loop stability for gentle roll casts, while the even body allows precise mending and line control. Whether you're picking apart pocket water with a small dry or swinging wets through a shaded riffle, this line responds with control, not overreaction. It’s built for anglers who read the water, not overpower it.

Fine-Tuned for Slower Rods and Thoughtful Presentations

Bamboo and fiberglass rods offer unique flex patterns—responsive yet forgiving. But not every line plays well with that softness. The 444 Sylk Double Taper was made specifically to complement these rod actions, enhancing their ability to delicately load and deliver accurate casts at close to mid-range distances. The double taper profile allows for a versatile cast cadence—perfect for those who want to control their loop shape, length, and energy transfer with precision.

The line’s ultra-thin diameter further increases its subtlety, making it easier to cast under overhangs or in confined spaces without slapping the surface or spooking wary fish. And because it features a long, level center section, the Sylk DT excels at both single-handed roll casting and aerial presentations. After one or two casts, most anglers discover how naturally it pairs with classic rods—it doesn't fight the rod, it flows with it.

Adding to its versatility is the ability to reverse the line once one end wears down. This built-in longevity makes it not only a smart technical choice but a sustainable one. It’s ideal for anglers who appreciate the long game—seasoned fishers who understand that quality gear doesn’t just catch more fish, it lasts longer and performs better every time.

Subtle Color, Strong Identity

The Sylk’s color—a soft, muted yellow—was chosen for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Visually, it nods to the heritage of silk lines from decades past, preserving that warm, vintage tone anglers associate with a more traditional fly fishing experience. Functionally, it offers low visibility to fish while remaining easy for the angler to track against varied water conditions.

This line also benefits from modern conveniences like a front-welded loop, which simplifies rigging while maintaining a clean, low-profile connection to your leader. Despite its classical design ethos, it performs seamlessly in today’s environments—from small Appalachian brook trout creeks to meadow spring creeks in the Rockies.

With the 444 Sylk Double Taper, Cortland has created a line that honors fly fishing’s rich history without sacrificing the convenience and durability of modern innovation. It’s not just a nod to tradition—it’s a line designed to keep you in perfect sync with the water, your cast, and the rod in your hand.
