FAQ

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

See orange :)

Very good to see. So you know exactly where you fish. In my water it is not allowed to fish with a strike indicator so you have a better chance to see when the fish takes the fly very important when you cloud not see the fish. For me the best line.

Modern trout

My go to fly line for trout as well as bream. I cast it well and love the color, of course I still believe color does matter. Some might say it’s all in my head…. but it’s just the way I customize my personal fly fishing experience.

The Modern Trout is an excellent all around line

I really appreciate the Modern Trout. It works well on many of the rods that I regualrly use. I appreciate the fact that it can toss delicate dry flies, throw streamers, and roll-cast with ease and distance. It allows me to use one line throughout a day that can range from fishing weighted streamers, delicate dry flies, and smaller soft-hackles.

Excellent line!

I replaced my SA MPX line with the cortland 444 modern trout for my 3WT med-fast action rod. This line was a world of difference, and did not feel clunky when casting.

I would only ask for a welded loop for the backing end.

Modern Trout Orange Fly Line for Precision Casting

Cortland’s Modern Trout Orange fly line is a specialized tool designed for technical trout anglers who demand visual control and delicate presentation. Whether you're targeting selective risers in a slow-moving spring creek or navigating changing light conditions during a long day on the water, this vibrant orange line offers unmatched visibility. Its high-contrast color allows anglers to detect subtle takes and track the drift with greater precision—an advantage in both overcast and low-light conditions.

This line is not just about being seen—it’s about performing when every cast counts. Engineered with a finely balanced weight-forward taper, the Modern Trout Orange loads effortlessly at short-to-moderate distances and maintains loop stability through variable wind or tight quarters. It provides the delicacy needed for dry fly work while retaining enough backbone for small streamers or emergers. For anglers who enjoy close-quarters fishing or technical waters, this line offers the ideal combination of finesse and responsiveness.

With a supple feel and low-memory construction, this line excels in subtle presentations and controlled mends. It also pairs well with modern graphite and fiberglass rods, making it a favorite among progressive trout anglers. Whether you’re stalking wild browns or casting to pressured rainbows, this line gives you the edge when precision matters most.

Built on Cortland’s Proven Trout Line Architecture

What makes this line stand out is its foundation. The Modern Trout Orange is built on the same trusted taper profile as its Moss Green counterpart, delivering consistent performance across a wide range of trout fishing scenarios. The core-to-coating synergy ensures low memory and smooth handling, reducing tangles and improving shooting distance. Its slick outer coating is designed for cold to moderate freshwater conditions, meaning this line stays manageable even during early-season hatches or brisk mountain mornings.

Cortland's precision-manufacturing ensures that each line segment—from head to running line—is dialed in for seamless energy transfer. The front taper allows you to turn over long leaders with accuracy, while the rear taper is optimized for roll casts and mends. Whether you're casting across a wide river bend in upstate New York or dropping flies beneath overhanging branches in the Pacific Northwest, the Modern Trout Orange performs with reliable consistency.

A Versatile Tool for All-Season Trout Anglers

Anglers in Cortland, New York—and far beyond—will appreciate how this line adapts to a wide variety of trout water types and fly styles. The bright orange color not only aids in tracking but also helps newer anglers refine their casting mechanics, making it a valuable choice for guides and educators alike. Despite its high visibility, the Modern Trout Orange maintains the subtle presentation qualities that experienced trout fishers demand.

Whether you’re fishing dry flies during an evening hatch or presenting small nymphs in pocket water, this line gives you the control and visual feedback to maximize your success. As with all Cortland fly lines, the Modern Trout Orange is crafted in the USA and tested by anglers who know that success on the water comes down to the right tool in the right situation. For those in NY and across the United States seeking a versatile, easy-to-track fly line for trout, the Modern Trout Orange is a worthy addition to any gear bag.
